This is a rare find -- a 16' long birchbark canoe made from a single sheet of bark. Finding a tree with that height and girth is almost impossible. The bark was harvested from a birch in northern Ontario near Hudson Bay.
The canoe was built by an Abenaki Algonquin, Aaron York. It is a work of art, but was built to paddle, and she paddles beautifully. The thwarts and carved beautifully, and the gore panels of winter bark were etched with the image of Gitaskog, a horned serpent that natives believe live in Lake Champlain.
