The Canyon Wren Goes to the Spa

Earlier this week, I hauled my newly acquired but decidedly oldish Grand Canyon dory, the Canyon Wren, west to Moab for some long-overdue attention from the women at Big Drop Boatworks. I spent one night dodging smoke, and doing a little night mouse fishing in the Colorado high country, got up early, then hightailed it to Moab and back home again in one day.
It was brutally hot, the highway shimmered, and the boat rode behind me under a canvas cover like an aging passenger being transported to a very specialized spa. The farther we got into Utah, the more she seemed to perk up though. At least in my head… Red rock, open desert, big canyon country. Familiar surroundings for a decked hard boat.
This trip marks the beginning of a series following the Big Drop crew as they peel back the years and give the Canyon Wren a modern refresh from her glory days in the late ’80s and ’90s. She has plenty of miles, a few scars and one fairly questionable paint job to account for.
